West 2 shower room:
The SHM Director says the shower room for that wing is going to be made usable again. In the mean time, residents will share with the West 1 shower, downstairs.

I just wanted everyone to know that Jean Basheer, our beloved Activities director is moving to another nursing home on December 6. Please call her, wish her well, and let her know how much we have appreciated her wonderful efforts to make our lives so much more enjoyable.
The administration is looking for a replacement, but in the mean time, our hard-working activities staff will shoulder the added load, and could use any help and support we can offer.

I recently discovered that SHM stopped scheduling normal dental care for my mother in '04 January, over 2 years ago!
I was able to get my mother's dental record from the once
visiting Dentist, Dr. Price, Dental Associates, Ltd, 5417D Backlick Rd, Spgfld,Va22151 703.750.9404,
and schedule her one year overdue dental exam and care.
Given that poor dental care can lead to pain, and heart & digestive problems, please ensure your resident has not fallen to the same lapse in dental care.

Several folk have mentioned difficluty arranging with the staff for resident foot care.
As I understand, 'normal' foot care is an activity of daily living (ADL), appropriately done with the help of the regular staff.
However, if there are health issues such as diabetes, lack of sensation, foot pain, discoloration, inflamation, nail thickening, etc, talk to a nurse on your wing (http://users.erols.com/jbirch/ffc/staff.html), who keeps a "Podiatry log".
When the podiatrist visits (each wing 3-4 times per month), the log tells him which residents in the wing to see.
.. West wings(Wed. PM): Leland T. Gilmore, D.P.M. 8550 Lee Hwy #750 Fairfax VA 22031 (703) 560-3773
.. the other wings: Drs. Keist (Wed. AM) & Miller (Tue. AM)
. Initially, the Dr. will need a signed release, and (for medicare and other insurance coverage (~$35)) a referal from your primary doctor.
. Medicare recommends quarterly treatments of foot issues.

As of a few days ago, we have a new SHM Director: Ken Thompson 65@yahoo.com,
and new Director of Nursing: Dottie White.
He invites family to contact him directly with new or standing issues. I recommend you present new nursing issues thru your nursing supervisor first.
I hope to provide more complete information soon, on the SHM web STAFF page.

I did not know that Ken was temporary (apparently displaced from the Beverly facility in DC that lost it's license, and was forced to close.)
The Current rumor is that another new director is coming Tuesday, June 12. During Ken's stay, the resident computer web connection was changed to Cox DSL, and is currently working well. See the Services, Activities page for more on use of the Residents' computer in the Crystal room.

The new (last month) SHM executive director, Mark Howard, has asked to give a state of the home presentation, if we wish to meet at the facility some evening soon.
I think that would be a good chance to get a feel for the other new staff as well.
Post a note here, and we can get a consensus about what days & times would be most convenient for everyone.

Note: The 'new' Ex.Dir. is gone soon. Mark Howard was encouraging and helpful while he lasted. Please keep an eye out for his replacement.

A 'Family Council' meeting will be conducted by the new Administrators, on Tuesday, December 11, at 6PM, probably in the Crystal Room.

The Family Education Presentation, in the Willow Room, introduced some new staff members, and was followed some months later, by another, by the new administrator. We now have Denise Feltenberger as a designated liaison. Her office is in the Willow Room. Please read the minutes of several Family Council meetings we have had since then, and join in if you can. . . . See more under this blog's Family Council heading.

Thank you for the very well thought out and documented list of suggestions. Without currently going into any details, some of your points are in the process of being acted upon and will be rolled out in the renovation. Attention to the elevators are high on our list, as well as various ramp changes being looked at. More later. Thank you, Gary L. Krulewitz, Executive Director
