Painful noise in West 1
For the last few weeks, a harsh humming noise has been coming from the ceiling or walls or ductwork, and gradually getting louder. I suspect it is contributing to my mother's growing discomfort. I have reported it to the nurses & the engineer is looking at it, but no relief yet.
John B, Jan 26

I searched and found the sound much louder in a room in West 2. Mr. Davila (Engineer) confirmed it was a thermostat-controlled blower/compressor. ...

Last week, the engineer ordered several new compressors, to replace some of the 1960's vintage room compressors making the most noise. He says they should be in, in a week or so. If incessant humming is a problem in your room, be sure to let him know soon!

Flooding in Activities office:
The south end of the activities office is flooded (frequently) because the ice machine sump pump tubing was not well installed, so water has been leaking into the wall, into the storage boxes, and across the floor, providing a slip hazard. The office cannot be locked because they lost the door key; so all walking residents & staff are at risk of slipping on the very slick floor.
I have moved the boxes out of the water, and informed the nursing staff, because there is no engineering nor housekeeping staff at nite.

Flooding in Activities office:
Housekeeping cleaned up the flooding. Engineering is working on the wall plumbing for the beauty salon next to Activities, and a shower on West 2.
And I made some repairs to the pump switch & the ice machine plumbing.

Flooding in Activities office:
Engineering replaced the ice machine sump pump, but did not turn it on, so activities was flooded again. I turned it on (removed the shipping lock, and it now works) & called housekeeping to mop up again.

Flooding in Activities office:
The pump is working, the floor is mopped, but the tiles squirt trapped water when tread on. I've set up a fan to try to dry the Activities floor thoroughly.

Re-Painful noise in West wing rooms:
The engineer said he would be replacing the noisy compressors today, but hasn't. I'll be talking to him again tomorrow. Any other rooms with noisy machinery to follow up on?

Toilet repair request:
I submitted a repair request two days ago, after leaving a phone message last week.
They replaced the faulty flapper valve that was causing the toilet to constantly run, and I adjusted the new parts to stop the constant cycling, so that is fine now.
Feb.16

Toilet request found again by nurse today, so the response was to the phone call. Feb.17

Intense noise problem:
The engineer promised to do the repair Friday morning, 'for sure'.

Mr.Davila said, "My workers have not shown up for work since last week, and I tried to twice, but did not want to wake her."

The inspectors are here today (March 24)! This is an opportunity to voice complaints directly to the state licensing team. The team is five women, with special name tags. I expect they will be throuout the facility until about 5PM.

Mr.Davila, the facility engineer, has left, and Khushhal Myskinyar has apparently returned, in his place.

WARNING
I noticed & reported a fire hazard in my mother's room. The only outlet near her bed is on the wall behind her bed, and if the bed is pushed against the wall and raised or lowered, it will shear or tear the plug and outlet from the wall, causing sparks and perhaps fire.
I have spoken to the nursing staff & left messages with the engineer, and propped a pillow behind the bed to try to minimize the risk to my mother.
I know this danger exists in at least one other room.
Please check your own room for this danger, especially if you have an electric bed.
John B.

Hi folks!
The 'solution' to the fire hazard above is to block the bed away from the wall with a hunk of 2x4 lumber on the floor. They also require that beds be perpendicular to the wall (to reduce the chance of this happening) and under the wall light. This required moving her furniture around, but it is good now.
I'm still worried about other residents in the same jeopardy. If you see a bed with a side (instead of an end) against the wall, please dial "0" to notify nursing, engineering, & the administrator (who finally got it done).

PHONES:
We occasionally have problems with the phone system not working properly.
- Part of the problem is that if someone presses the "*" button, the PBX will not ring the phone, but ask you for the 'Message Star code'. Unfortunately, no 'code' has been set for any of the residents, so this just prevents incoming calls. Press "*" again to turn them on again.

The Zoo trip has been postponed to June by the predicted rain friday. The trip will be to a mall instead.

The shower room in West 1 is being renovated, and not usable for another week or two. Many folk are being rolled to the other wing in a towel. Others are avoiding the issue by refusing when they can stand it.

The Shelley Memorial Tea Party was very nice today! The tea was delicious, the snacks yummy, and the Brevard Childrens Dance troup, visiting from Florida, gave a delightful presentation of group and individual show tune dances, and some audience participation.

Reminder: Many rooms have new electric beds, and the remodeling of West 1 has begun, and is estimated to be finished in Feb. The remodeling will require that every resident be relocated (within the facility) for an unknown period, after which they will be returned. Family or friends should keep in touch to ease this potentially traumatic sequence.

Can someone ask the engineer to replace the W1 aquarium outlet because it is still loose, and does not hold plugs properly.
daryl

FYI,
The chapel has been moved to the far end of W1, where the Beauty Parlor was, and where it was, is now a staff development office & training lab.
That seems to be as far as the renovation has gone. I expect they will recommence in January.

Kushall had promised to fix the W1 outlet when they refurbished the lobby. They have almost finished the lobby, but not yet done so.
They have replaced the comfortable and easily wheelchair accessible pedistal tables with restrictive, square, 4-legged tables. Many of the residents are complaining about the inconvenient height, which makes their meals more difficult to reach, and makes the room more difficult to navigate. The new tables are lighter, and much easier to move.
They have also removed the Aquarium and the Family Council computer for the residents. I have tried to contact Kushall about it, but I have just found the computer desk in the trash.
More to come...

Help! I'm looking for a special container to make up for loss of bathroom drawers.

. Because they removed the bathroom drawers which allowed residents to keep their personal hygiene supplies: brushes/combs, toothpaste/brush, denture supplies, make-up, mouthwash, etc. where they need them. Now residents must figure out a way to constantly get all of their stuff back and forth, or try to find someone to ask for help. If we can find a drawerable basket or bin, preferably not sealed (for moisture), perhaps with a side that drops for ease of reach. That way she can keep it in her bedstand drawer, carry it on her lap or hang it on her chair, and put it on the to the bathroom counter, in reach, but out of the sink, and not have to stand up while reaching into it, nor empty everything out to use.

. I sadden to think of the lack of consideration on the part of the many unknown and unaccountable employees in the process of choosing and approving the replacement furniture, which makes everyday life more complicated and difficult for every resident in the facility. If we find something that will work, perhaps we can offer it to other residents that are still trying to care for themselves. I need help finding such a container, please help me.

I replaced the touch dimmer in my mother's room, again in July, because it hurts her arthritis to reach up to the switch, but it has again disappeared (unplugged & removed). I have reported the loss to several floor staff, with no response. The operator referred me to Jessica who has been out since last week, and she said she will look into it.

I have unmounted the extra PBX telephone in my mother's room. I had to get it replaced when the receiver disappeared during the redecoration, but it is now usable because I found the receiver in the basement in the "Resident Laungry Room" when I was looking in the huge box-O-books (where the library went when the shelves were discarded during the renovation). So a usable facility phone is available.

Good thing: The new State Inspection Notebook is now posted on the front of the reception desk, where folk in wheelchairs can get it without having to ask the phone operator to hand it down to them.
But, there are about 30 pages of findings from the most recent inspection. When you visit, glance at an entry or two to ensure they don't happen to you.

I recently noticed that all of the hand-soap dispensers (in the west wing) are (like the mirrors I have mentioned before) mounted to high to be used safely by the residents. This is an invitation to strains falls, or dirty hands. I have asked the nurse to see about it last week, and got my mother a bottle dispenser, but the nurse already admitted 'she forgot'.

A 'Family Council' meeting will be conducted by the new Administrators, on Tuesday, December 11, at 6PM, probably in the Crystal Room.

Despite flu going around, the hand cleaner dispensers on W1 are apparently empty, and the servers don't seem to wash their hands before handling meals & utensils.
