Family Council
Family Council site
10-20 of us are now meeting bi-weekly to follow-up on the new administration's initiative in support of the Family Council. Please see the recent updates to the SHM Family Council links page. In particular, Minutes and Projects to stay current.
The birds-eye view (outline) map is also better, and our neighborhood Civic Association (that used to meet in the old W1 dining room) has also re-extended it's welcome. (Click Sleepy Hollow Woods and double click the big outline for their info, or our building for how we fit in.

For those who are going to the Alzheimer presentation this evening, they forgot to mention that it is in the Willow Room. Get there early for a good seat.
Announcement: the Van Trip to Ford's Theater was misplaced on the preliminary and first published calendars. It is this Thursday, Dec. 14. It is not Friday the 15th, nor Thursday the 21st. Also, there will be no 'Nail Care' on Dec. 25.
Have a happy holiday, John B.

Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan 'S Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.
One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "Sound Of Music."
Here are the lyrics she used:
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails
and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These
are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses, Polident and
Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and
porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or
food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they
bring, These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin', Thin bones and
fractures and hair that is thinnin', And we won't mention our short
shrunken frames, When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had, And then I don't feel so bad.
(Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over Four minutes and repeated encores)

A 'Family Council' meeting will be conducted by the new Administrators, on Tuesday, December 11, at 6PM, probably in the Crystal Room.

We have received only one message, about a family council in January. Could we make it educational, like the presentation last year? Perhaps more about how to work with the SHM staff?
Perhaps the folk who have been around a while could talk about how to get certain issues resolved?
Perhaps the same time of day, near the end of the month?

The computer was unusable for a few days because the power button was broken. I fiddled with it to make it work.

Reminder:
If your resident would enjoy using the residents' computer (which has web access) for fun, games, email, music, family pictures, shopping, reading, hobbies, ..., just ask Ivan, the business manager. If he is not up to it, call me, the two of us can get it done together.

Big! attendance at the Ash Wednesday service today! 30 residents, 6 guests & 5 clergy! Very nice! The wind storm started up just as the service let out!
Notice: There will be a Family Council tonite (Wed. Feb.20) at Sleepy Hollow Manor. Sorry about the short notice. Ask the front desk for the time & place.
My apologies: The Feb.20 meeting was not a Family Council, but "Family Education Presentation" of the new Administrator and his staff. Denise (Soc.Svc.Dir.) tried to send invitations to everyone. So if you or someone else who should have been, were not invited by mail, please let me know.

There will be a actual Family Council meeting next Monday, March 3, at 6PM in the Willow Room.
The first order of business will be to establish a more formal Family Council and set of productive goals.
Blank ballots and some Family Council notes will be available on the FFC site and in the office door pocket of Denise Feltenberger (Soc.Svc.Dir. & FC Liaison) in West I.
The official Family Council distribution is not yet working, so please pass the word to visitors you meet.

Vy Tran, the Activities Director, has posted an LSP sheet for your resident as she discussed at the Family Education Presentation last Wed. Please check it out. If you want to improve it, keep it simple, and make sure the care staff know what you have in mind.
Very nice.

Despite flu going around, the hand cleaner dispensers on W1 are apparently empty, and the servers don't seem to wash their hands before handling meals & utensils.
The building renovations mentioned by the administrator at the Family Education Presentation, are to be planned by Golden/Vizia Designs in a few weeks, and expected to be for some public areas like the lobby & PT. However, Vizia will be meeting with the administrator, and consider any recommendations we have by then.

I returned the contents of the box marked with her Ms.Etta's name, that had been sitting in my mother's room since she moved in, containing photos, ID cards, & watch to Ms.Etta at her current nursing home in Crystal City.

I have finally posted the April Activities Calendar, and apologize for the delay.
I have also posted the next three Family Councils calendar, including a Saturday, May 14th, which will be at 2PM, for those who cannot often make the Monday evening meetings.
From now on, we will spend much more time on Issues & Answers, instead of Organizing.

Please express our condolences to her co-workers and patients, on the death of one of our staff nurses, Ceble Telahen, while at work this past week. The receptionist should have more details.
